How Smol Launch categorizes products

Every product approved for a weekly launch is assigned to one or more categories at submission time, then reviewed by a human moderator before the launch period opens. The category list is intentionally narrow — fewer, broader categories make it easier for buyers to find a useful product than dozens of overlapping micro-categories that fragment the index. When two reasonable categories apply, we pick the one that best matches the product's job-to-be-done, not the one with the broadest brand recognition.

Categories aren't static. We watch which buckets accumulate the most launches week over week and split or merge accordingly. The AI & ML category, for instance, was split off from SaaS Tools in mid-2025 when AI-native tools started dominating submissions. If a new product genuinely doesn't fit any existing category, the editorial team adds one rather than forcing a misclassification — accurate categorization compounds as a discoverability advantage over time.
