About
Hey HN,
I built AI Sabotage, a fast-paced tactical card game centered on a playful premise: rival operators racing to assemble the first functional AGI while deploying malware, EMP purges, and system overrides to wreck each other's rigs.
Matches take around 3–5 minutes. The core loop is a set-collection puzzle—you need four distinct healthy components online to complete your rig, while balancing defensive shielding against counter-attacks and disruptions. It features solo play against an adaptive offline AI, hot-seat local play, and an online ranking mode.
Why I Built It & The Tech
As a mobile developer, I wanted to explore how far I could push Flutter for 2D turn-based game development without leaning on heavyweight game engines like Unity or Godot.
A few technical choices and takeaways from the build:
- Pure Flutter UI & Canvas: Instead of an external game engine, the board state, card interactions, and animations are built natively in Flutter. Managing custom layout math, gesture recognition, and 60fps card transitions directly in the framework kept the package lightweight (~48MB on iOS) with near-instant boot times.
- Local-First & Offline Resilience: Matches against the CPU run entirely client-side with zero network calls required. The heuristics for the AI opponent run locally, evaluating current board threats and hand value deterministically.
- Clean State Transitions: Turn-based mechanics require strict phase handling (draw -> action -> resolve sabotage -> check win conditions). Keeping logic separated from UI rendering made testing deck distribution and edge-case sabotage triggers much cleaner.

I'd love feedback from the HN community on the game feel, card balance, and your thoughts on using Flutter for non-engine card/board games versus traditional engines. I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer questions about the tech stack, game balance, or Flutter performance!
PS: for each honest and brutal feedback I'll give you an app code (ads-free and private games creation)
